for everyone
Photobucket 01 Welcome back NATURE. After a long hiatus.

This time to Tanglir Falls in Bukit Tinggi.

Photobucket 02 The way to Bukit Tinggi was straightforward; the directions to the falls were not.

The Waterfalls of Malaysia page was true to its words; finding our way through the various farmland splits was like a maze: WE MISSED A LEFT TURN (shown in picture 12) and what was supposed to be a 45 minutes trek turned into a 2++-hours LONG & TIRING uphill task!!!

Here (UNFORTUNATELY), included are pictures of the WRONG & LONG way in. But it still leads to the same place at the end of the day, hopefully it helps.

*Do note also, most of the pictures were taken ON OUR WAY OUT, so it doesn't correctly state the time of the day and directions. I've tried my best to stay true to the track; hoping that my sometimes failing memory remembers correctly : >
Photobucket 03 Arriving from KL-Karak Highway, we took the Bukit Tinggi exit (Note: NOT the Berjaya Colmar Village, Bukit Tinggi one...) and headed towards Selesa Hillhomes.

*I remember this place well; been here before for a filming location recce, searching in vain for BAMBOO FORESTS. My work partner actually locked his set of car keys in the middle of the bamboo area... Unforgettable experience of waiting for an hour plus for the spare keys.

After successfully locating the parking spot, we backtracked to Bukit Tinggi town for a quick breakfast. We started our hike slightly before 10am. The pictures show our parking spot and the trail head area.
Photobucket 04 Before you start, make sure you bring MOSQUITO REPELLANTS.

Swarms of 'em m*thaf**kers!!! I kid you not!!!
Photobucket 05 10 minutes into the trek should bring you here. The road in front was in the process of being tarred; we took the right turn into a empty farmland. Photobucket 06 The trek is actually quite well laid out with tarred roads most of the way and clear trail heads. We kept to the main trail for most of the way, going straight...

Photobucket

07 ... and up (and up... and up...) LONG & STEEP slopes.

Photobucket 08 Straight & further we went...

Photobucket

09 The weather was generally very good for the whole day. We were initially rather worried; since it was always raining in the 2nd half of the day in KL for the past week.

Worst case scenario was, Take this as a very long trip to eat Mc Ds at Genting Sempah ; p
Photobucket 10 The 100mm USM Macro lens is calling out to me...Photobucket 11 Passing through more farms; reaching the crossroad which we were SUPPOSED TO turn left.

*We clarified this on our way back with a friendly tractor guy. Why wasn't he around in the morning!?!?!!!

**It takes roughly 25 minutes to reach this crossroad area.

Photobucket

12 Better view of the crossroad.

Turning left would lead you on a descent and straighter (easier) walk towards farmlands below, we were told.

Why did we go straight ahh... and over mountains and slopes, (at least it felt like that...) Why ah... why ah...

My legs are still sore even while I am typing this!!!
Photobucket 13 If you go straight, you get to see this. Nice stretch with farms and some sort of a nursery? Super consolation prize I tell myself.

Photobucket

14 Continuing our way up, the slopes got steeper and more deserted.
Photobucket 15 Abandoned plots. Somehow, I remembered seeing a lot of Dragon Fruit farms the last time I was around this area, none were in sight this time around??

Photobucket 16 Another split. Another pondering moment.

The different thing about the Tanglir hike is that there is not really any river clue. And most of the time I depend on rivers to give me hope; this time there was none. There was one somewhere after the Selesa Hillhomes/ Golf course area... but once you enter the farmland areas, nil. And scouring through the various splits, there was no sign of water anywhere, which played tricks to the mind.
Photobucket 17 This was the 2nd MAJOR split that we got wrong. Commons sense told us that rivers flow downhill. Well, most of the time...

The 1st attempt, we took the right turn, thinking we could locate a river source on lower grounds. What was before us were more slopes and farms. And there indeed was a small stream... No waterfall wor.

Luckily, there was a friendly immigrant worker who pointed us back to the correct track. Renewed hope and faith.
Photobucket 18 More walking. Limp and cramped legs by now... Photobucket 19 * This was taken on the way out. Another 10 minutes walk from previous point.

Again, we took another wrong turn. As most of the info sourced from the net stated that we should always stay on the main trail. Translated, we went straight... Another uphill climb!!!

We stopped and ask for tips from another two immigrant workers. Clueless duo. We decided to backtrack...

Do note white signboard at the right; there is a slight trickling stream there... We then turned left, the correct track marked with arrow...

Photobucket 20 MOSQUITOES. ABUNDANT. BE WARNED.

In fact, no swatting needed. Palming gently would land you 3-4 casualties any one time!!! Crazy!!!
Photobucket 21 If we had stopped less to swat mosquitoes we would have arrived earlier, hahahahaha!!!

Photobucket 22 The trail seemed to led us nowhere. This reminded us of our once upon a time Kemansah Falls outing: Turning round in circles and ended up way past all the falls? A repeat, we dread.

BTW, Bowling brand slippers are the most comfortable slippers that I've tried. Bought a pair when I was at Tg. Malim. Funny to see this here too...

Photobucket

23 Halfway trekking, another steep climb. Deflated us.

And out of nowhere came a roaring 4WD Pick-up. The driver was just as surprised to see us. Asked for directions and we were indeed on the right track. Yeay!!!

*Trek is accessible by car/ bikes. 4WD advisable or those who wants to take up the government's RM5K offer to change to another substandard local car??? Very tight roads. Be warned.
Photobucket 24 Farmland below. Far away, you can see a trail too. Looking back after the trip, I think this is the way if we had taken the correct left turn mentioned earlier in picture 12???

Photobucket 25 Along the farmland stretch below, we could faintly hear roaring falls? Are we nearing??? Photobucket 26 Another split. 4WD driver told us to follow the dirt trail on the right. * Picture 19 split to here is around 30 minutes.

Photobucket

27 Yeah!!! Yeah!!! Yeah!!! x 10000000

Photobucket 28 Err, this is supposed to illustrate cam-whoring overjoyed trekker... Tthe camera was excited too and overexposed the shot...???

Photobucket 29 We could see the lower falls from the thick foliage. But how to reach it? We noticed a ravine which "could" be accessed. We decided to explore the upper parts and revisit this option if-all-fails-worst-case-scenario.

*Picture 26 split to this point is roughly 5 minutes.

Photobucket 30 On the way up, we passed the Middle Falls as well. Decided to go visit and rest at the upper falls instead.

Photobucket 31 FLAT OUT.

The both of us, after being absent from hiking for some time, took a heavy toil on us.

Relieved tired happy...

Photobucket

32 ... although it doesn't show on trekking partner's face. He looks in pain, with his cramped legs.

Kawan, Lata Khong next??? Hahahaha.

Photobucket

33 We didn't stay too long at the upper "MINI" falls as we were eager to find our way down to the Lower and Middle Falls.

Photobucket

34 Finding our way down was the next challenge. There wasn't any clear marked trail down. We tried our luck scrambling down one of the slopes.

It was worth the effort, as you can see : >
Photobucket 35 The Middle Fall had a nice inviting deeper pool. Perfect for a quick bath, jacuzzi treatment thrown in.

As you can see on the left picture, I think I remembered seeing water pipings for integration for the farmlands below. I am unsure whether there are farms further upstream; which might be a source of pollution?

Photobucket

36 This trekker was undeterred by that though. You only live once and I was too damn tired to care!!! Hahaha.

Photobucket 37 And finally, cramp-leg trekking partner even managed to run in the waters. Loved that smile on the face : >

Photobucket 38 Below, the Lower Falls were beckoning for us. We moved on duly.

Photobucket

39 If getting down to the Middle Falls was difficult, the Lower Falls proved to be even more a challenge. We tried a few spots to hike down, to no avail. We backtracked to the earlier ravine area.

The ravine looked like a dried up waterfall to us . A powerful one in its time, judging by the fallen tree barks and scattered large rocks on our way down.

Do take heed if you choose to go down this way. It is a treacherous stretch and frankly we didn't see any other access route down. And do remember to monitor the changing weather. I am suspecting that once with rainfall, your access route back up would be very slippery and dangerous, if not completely sealed off?
Photobucket 40 The Lower Falls. Majestic looking. At least 20ft tall, much more powerful. It had a nice shallower pool. Another jacuzzi session beckons!!! Photobucket 41 Another view of the surrounding area. I think this was taken from the Upper Falls... Loved the greens around the area.

Photobucket 42 A deserved break. Regardless of insecticide polluted water or source, I'm gonna have my cuppa!!!!

Photobucket 43 Remembered to bring sugar this time around, but still no taste leh. Diluted, in went the Milo Fuse sachets too. Mocha anyone? Photobucket 44 Pretzels? Wow. So un-hiking-like. Scones next time around? Photobucket 45 Impatient trekker waiting for coffee. The smell was irresistible.Photobucket 46 After 30 minutes or so soaking in the environment, getting wet of course, we were off. Dark clouds were above us. Gingerly we trekked back up the ravine.

Photobucket

47 Then it was blue skies again.

On our way out, we were still debating how impossible it is to manage to trek to the falls in 45 minutes. Unknowing that we have missed the crucial left turn.

NEXT TIME, read properly lah!!!
Photobucket 48 Ahh well, no GPS, still wanna trek... Has its advantages, and more story/ picture to tell : p Photobucket 49 We took slightly 1 hr and 45 minutes to trek back out to our parked car. Fatigue and the damn mosquitoes being our major distraction. Civilasation never looked so good suddenly to us. Photobucket 50 Souvenirs. There was a leech bite in between the toes somewhere...

Photobucket 51 On our way back to KL, we decided to detour and go look for Lata Khong. Which we didn't manage, and shall return some other time.

Mempage exit, I will find out where you are!!!!

Photobucket

52 Genting are for the losers!!!! Botched Photoshop attempt as well, shooting and post-processing with Canon G9 RAW files is still something new to me. The lack of Dynamic Range is something I am unused to too. Must learn. Must learn.

Photobucket 53 Great outing Kawan. Camping trip is next.Photobucket 54 Nature, welcome back : >

Thanks for the kind words. Had great fun. I guess the bites were a small price to pay; better than leeches attacks : >

Anny, replies to your questions:
- Cooking coffee.
- Yes, same guy.
- I'd rather be at Great Wall than to enrich their coffers.
- 山水咖啡, not that good. But loved the atmosphere.
- Naked Arthur. Hmm...
- My leg.
- Yeah. My feeling then.
- Most of the time, impromptu session. Last minute... I would normally invite others after successfully reaching one falls. Better than a whole bunch of lost people circling around in the wilderness, which can be dangerous : >
- Girls, welcome. Of course. Hahahaha.

Sekian, terima kasih.

This was a bit long-winded. Trying hard to be concise and yet, thorough.

Before the trip, I found it quite hard to source for relevant directions off the net... Thought this might help like-minded souls. Good luck : >

The start of the trail is on the left side, about 20m at the abandoned farmland. If you took the left turn where the tractor told you, you would have arrived from the left side.
